MUT champions local talent and Innovation at World Intellectual Property Day 2025

The three-segment World Intellectual Property Day (WIPD) celebration started at the University on 16 April 2025 and will end at the same venue on 25 April 2025. MUT is hosting this annual event, whose media launch on 16 April was well covered by provincial and national media. The Companies and Intellectual Property Commission (CIPC) was organised by MUT and the Department of Science, Technology and Innovation (DSTI) through the National Intellectual Property Management Office (NIPMO); CIPC; Department of Trade and Industry and Competition; the Technology Innovation Agency (TIA); the Small Enterprise Development and Finance Agency (SEDFA); Durban University of Technology; University of Zululand; University of KwaZulu-Natal; and the Durban Film Office (DFO), some of whose representatives were present at the event. Another MUT staff member achieves prestigious NRF Rating

The excitement at the University continues to build as more of our outstanding academics receive prestigious NRF ratings! MUT prepares for graduation: One week to the big day

While everyone at the University may be thinking about the long weekend, the staff charged with organising the annual graduation ceremony are forging ahead with their plans. On 15 April 2025, a week before the beginning of the graduation ceremonies, the organising team, under the leadership of the Acting Registrar, Zolisa Gqamane, met for the last time to talk about what still needed to be done. The team, composed of the Registrar’s office, the Department of Marketing and Communications, Protection Services, Operations, Information Technology and networks, and Infrastructure, took a walk to the Seme Hall, where the event will occur. The team also checked other areas that needed their attention. Come 2026, Mangosuthu University of Technology (MUT) will be guided by a new strategic plan—one shaped through the collective voice of its people. This new direction is the result of an extensive and inclusive consultation process, driven by the Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Professor Nokuthula Sibiya and her Executive Management Committee (EMC) and implemented by the Directorate of Institutional Planning and Research (DIPR), under the leadership of Dr Liile Lekena-Bayaga, Acting Senior Director. The final internal stakeholder consultation took place on 16 April 2025, marking the close of a rigorous series of engagements that spanned weeks and brought together staff and students from all corners of the Institution. “This was our last session, aimed specifically at accommodating those unable to attend earlier meetings due to other commitments. MUT Radio inducts new recruits – a new era begins

The airwaves at Mangosuthu University of Technology (MUT) are buzzing with fresh energy as MUT Radio officially welcomed its newest cohort of volunteers for the 2025/26 season. On 11 April 2025, an induction session was held at the MUT HR Boardroom to introduce eight dynamic students selected following a highly competitive talent search in March. With over 30 passionate applicants vying for a spot on the University’s official radio platform, only the most promising voices and creative minds made the final cut. SRC Member and students prepare for graduation: Ticket collection underway

The number of students who come to collect their graduation tickets is growing, reflecting how seriously they are taking the looming rite of passage called graduation. Nearly 3,000 students from the University’s three faculties will graduate from 22 to 24 April 2025 at its iconic Seme Hall. One of these students will be the Student Representative Council Religious, Art and Culture Officer, Sobuhle Nkabinde. Nkabinde, from Nkandla’s Thalaneni, in northern KwaZulu-Natal, will graduate with an Advanced Diploma in Cost and Management Accounting. This is Nkabinde’s second graduation from the University. He said he found studying “challenging, but through hard work and dedication, I made it,” Nkabinde said. Two other students who collected their tickets also from north of KwaZulu-Natal with Nkabinde were Nomvelo Ntuli from Eshowe and Luyanda Mathenjwa, from Esikhawini, also in north of KwaZulu-Natal. ITS Training Boosts Admin Efficiency

The staff from various University departments that deal with personnel, student and financial matters will now be more effective in executing their duties. From 7 to 9 April 2025, these staff members attended a workshop run by ADAPT IT, an IT company.  Staff were empowered with additional knowledge on the use of the ITS system. Nkosana Jijimba, a business analyst from the Department of Information Technology and Networks, said they had identified that staff from these departments needed to know more about the ITS system so they would be able to offer more services to their clients. “ITS has many layers that staff may not have been aware of. We looked at all three functional areas of the system, namely Student Systems, Finance, HR and Payroll, Space and HEMIS,” said Jijimba. MUT drives IP awareness with 2025 World IP Day Festivities

Mangosuthu University of Technology (MUT) will host the 2025 edition of the World Intellectual Property Day celebration. The event has three segments. On 16 April, the University will host the first segment, the Media Launch, at its main campus in Umlazi Township, Durban. On 24 April, MUT will host the second segment of the event, the Roadshow, at Durban’s Botanic Gardens. MUT will host the World Intellectual Property Day celebration at its main campus. World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) designated 26 April to celebrate Intellectual Property (IP). However, the 2025 edition of the event will be held a day before, as the designated day is a Saturday.
