For Immediate Release – 25 March 2025
MUT has the annual Teaching with Technology Summit
As higher education institutions globally adopt blended and online learning, the need for capacity-building and collaboration has never been greater. Being aware of these facts, the University’s Teaching and Learning Development Centre (TLDC) will once again have its annual ‘Teaching with Technology’ Summit, which is largely about how higher education must adapt to the current conditions. The 2025 event will be held at Durban’s Hilton Hotel on 27-28 March. Some of the key figures expected to participate in the summit are Dr Hazel Farrell, a Guest Speaker from South East Technological University (SETU), Ireland – Academic Lead for Gen AI and Chair of the Gen AI Steering Committee; Dr Arno Louw – Senior Specialist: Instructional Design (e-Learning); Manager: Centre for Academic Technologies Laboratory & Design Thinking Hub – University of Johannesburg.
Cebo Nyondo, one of the organisers of the Summit referred to Teaching with Technology (TwT) as “the strategic integration of digital tools, online platforms, and emerging technologies to enhance teaching, learning, and assessment”. TwT encompasses everything from blended learning and artificial intelligence (AI) to instructional design and digital pedagogies. “The aim is to create an engaging, accessible, and effective learning experience while preparing graduates for a technology-driven future and economy.
Giving the reasons for having the TwT Summit, Nyondo said the summit is a platform for academics, higher education policymakers and industry experts to explore the transformative role of technology in education. “The rapid advancement of digital tools, artificial intelligence and online learning solutions necessitates continuous dialogue on best practices, challenges and innovative strategies,” said Nyondo.
The summit will provide a space for knowledge-sharing, showcasing cutting-edge technologies, and fostering partnerships that enhance teaching and learning. Additionally, the summit ensures that institutions remain responsive to the evolving educational landscape, equipping academics with skills to navigate digital transformation effectively. The discussions also emphasise inclusivity, accessibility, and digital equity, thus ensuring that all students benefit from technology-enhanced learning. By bringing together thought leaders, academics, and EdTech innovators, the summit empowers participants to drive impactful change in their institutions and contribute to the global discourse on technology in education.
Since its inception in 2019, TwT Summit has significantly influenced digital education practices in higher education. Its key impacts include capacity building collaborations and networking. The summit has also contributed to the promotion of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning. At MUT alone there has been more than 100 paper presentations on teaching with technology best practices.
