Recruitment of External Council Members

The Council of Mangosuthu University of Technology is the highest decision-making body and is therefore responsible for the governance of and policy decisions affecting the University.

Nominations are being called for Twelve (12) vacancies on the MUT Council for a period of three or four years to be filled by persons who are not employees or students of the University, to be considered by reason of their special knowledge or expertise, representing appropriate sectors and professions and with a higher education qualification and a broad range of competencies in fields such as, but not limited to finance, auditing, information technology and engineering taking into account considerations of equity and diversity.

Chapter 4, Section 7 of the Higher Education Act stipulates the following:

A member of a Council or a member of a committee of Council or a person with delegated functions in terms of Section 68 (2)

  1. must be a person with knowledge and experience relevant to the objectives and governance of the public higher education institution concerned;
  2. must participate in the deliberations of the Council or the committees of Council or exercise any delegated function in the best interest of the public higher education institution concerned;
  3. must participate in the deliberations of the Council in the best interest of the University;
  4. must, before he or she assumes office, declare any business, commercial or financial activities undertaken for financial gain that may raise a conflict or possible conflict of interest with the University; and
  5. must be a person of good

         NB: Section 27(5B) of the amended Higher Education Act (2017) provides that:

Any person who has been a member of a Council of a Public Higher Education Institution where an Administrator has been appointed and the Council has been dissolved in terms of Section 49E; and against whom an Independent Assessor has made an adverse finding in the report contemplated in Section 47 (1)(b), shall not be eligible for appointment, election, re-appointment or re-election as a member of Council of any Public Higher Education Institution.

Applicants should note that as per the Institutional Rules, there will be no remuneration/honorarium for members of Council for meetings and any other university-related work. Members of Council shall be reimbursed for travelling, accommodation and other incidental expenses.

Prior to appointment, applicants will be subjected to a probity check. By making this application or accepting a nomination, a candidate gives consent that the probity check be conducted.

Each nomination/application should be duly signed and accompanied by a recent Curriculum Vitae of the nominee as well as a brief motivation. The completed nomination/ application form, together with a CV and motivation must be submitted electronically to the Registrar, Dr P. Masala at masala.phumzile@mut.ac.za by close of business on Monday, 14 October 2024. Late nominations/ applications will not be considered.
